Hawaiian Houses are different from houses you find on the Mainland. They are airy, to take advantage of the Trade Winds, and have a large Lanai, (Patio) where you can sit in the shade and enjoy a cool drink.

Also, since the Big Island is fairly large compared to the population there is very little infrastructure which means that most roads in the actual subdivisions are gravel, people drink rainwater, collected by water catchment system and then purified by various methods.
